The Origin Story
After experiencing the Five Boro Bike Tour in New York City, a simple question emerged: "Surely something like this must exist in the Bay Area?" Surprisingly, the answer was no. In 2014, what started as three friends testing whether it was even possible to bike around the entire Bay became something much bigger. That first experimental ride sparked an idea that would grow year after year - from just a handful of riders to over 100 cyclists in 2024. The ride grew organically, fueled by word of mouth and the shared joy of discovering our Bay Area by bike.

Our Mission
We formed LiveTheBay.org to create structured support for our growing community and partner with organizations making a difference in outdoor access and education. Those first ten years taught us something profound: there's an incredible appetite for connecting our diverse Bay Area communities through cycling. We've proven that ambitious rides can bring people together, challenge their perceived limitations, and create lasting impact through charitable partnerships.

The Vision: Transforming Bay Area Cycling
As we look to the next decade, we see The Bay Ride becoming the catalyst for a transformative cycling movement. Imagine a synchronized day of celebration spanning the entire Bay, where each community we ride through hosts their own cycling festival. From San Francisco to Oakland, Marin to San Jose, cities come alive with bike-centric events, family rides, and advocacy initiatives.
Our goal is ambitious but achievable: making the Bay Area the premier cycling metropolis in America. This means:
-
Uniting cycling advocacy groups under a shared mission
-
Creating a annual region-wide celebration of cycling culture
-
Advocating for connected, safe cycling infrastructure
-
Building bridges between communities through cycling
-
Inspiring the next generation of Bay Area cyclists
We're not just organizing a ride; we're building a movement to transform how people think about and experience cycling in our region. The Bay Ride is the spark that brings communities together, demonstrates what's possible, and leads the way toward a more bike-friendly Bay Area.
