A Ferry, a Stranger, and 3 PRs

Twelve miles and a conversation on the ferry changed how I'm thinking about building volume. Sometimes the best training advice comes from someone you just met.

A Ferry, a Stranger, and 3 PRs

The ride

Thirteen miles. Sixty-seven minutes of moving time. Three PRs. Not a big day on paper, but it mattered.

I've been honest about where my fitness sits right now. FTP at 216W, W/kg at 2.27. That's not where I want to be heading into TheBayRide on August 29th. The full loop is 135 miles around the Bay. I need volume, and I need to start building it now.

The conversation that changed the morning

I met someone on the ferry today. We got to talking. He mentioned he sometimes bikes to the Treasure Island ferry terminal before boarding, just to add miles to the commute. Simple idea. Obvious, almost. But I hadn't thought of it.

That's the thing about training in public. You pick up ideas from people who aren't following a plan, who are just riding because it fits their life. No coach. No periodization. Just, "I bike to the ferry sometimes."

I'm going to do the same.

The numbers

  • Distance: 12.73 miles
  • Moving time: 67 min
  • Elevation: 366 ft
  • Avg power: 86W
  • Work: 346 kJ
  • PRs: 3

Average watts were low. This was not an interval session. It was a commute ride, the kind that doesn't feel like training but adds up. Three PRs on segments I apparently hadn't touched in a while. I'll take it.

What "ramping up" actually looks like

I named the workout "Time to start ramping up the miles" before I left the house. That's the goal. Not a specific wattage target this week. Not a structured plan starting Monday. Just: more miles, more often, with the Treasure Island detour now in the rotation.

TheBayRide is nine weeks out. The 135-mile loop around the Bay doesn't care about good intentions. It cares about time in the saddle.

This was day one of taking that seriously again.

More to come.
